Year 2
Welcome to Rokesly’s Year 2 classes

Instead of our curriculum meeting for parents, the Year 2 staff held a zoom meeting to introduce the curriculum expectations and answer parents’ questions.

See our recent zoom video here.

As well as having large, busy and interesting classrooms, all Year 2 children have access to the outdoor classroom, wildlife garden and Science pod. Children are timetabled to use the IT suite, library and cooking bay through the week to really make the most of exciting hands-on learning opportunities. In year 2 we encourage all of our children to care for their environment and each other to ensure everyone gets the best opportunities for learning.

Through the school year, we use fascinating themes to cover the range of National curriculum areas. We make sure the children have great learning experiences outside of the classroom. We organise a trip at least every half term linked to our themes, so the children are inspired and can experience things first hand.

See our curriculum page for more detail about the subjects taught this year.

Year 2 children need to bring in their book bags into school every day. Inside book bags children keep their reading books, comment book and library book. We also put homework and letters inside, so it is always worth checking! Each child also has a ‘comment book’ in their book bag. We use these to inform you about your child’s progress and we welcome your own comments.

In Year 2 we expect the children to read regularly at home – every evening if possible. In addition the children will receive spellings to learn each week and a second piece of homework (either maths, writing or topic work) fortnightly.

Parents are welcome to help in the classroom and on school trips. The Head Teacher holds a volunteer induction meeting at the beginning of the school year which volunteers must attend. All volunteers must have relevant checks to work in school, which we will help you with at the meeting. Please see the Volunteers in School page and look out for more information in our school newsletters.

During the year we hold curriculum workshops for you to come in and work with your child. This term’s workshops will help you support your child in Maths.

The resources we use at the workshop are available by following the link – IMPACT Maths Snakes and Ladders

For fun and interactive ways to support your child try the Maths at Home page

All Year 2 children will be doing the Key Stage 1 National Curriculum Tests in May. The children will be tested in maths and reading. As well as the tests, teachers will use your child’s work through the year to make judgements about their attainment in Maths, Reading, Writing and Science. There will be a SATs meeting for all Year 2 parents in the Spring term.
