Year 1
Welcome to Rokesly’s Year 1 classes.
Rainbow class, Orange Class, Green Class

In Year 1 we build a safe and warm environment where learning can really flourish. We encourage all of our children to care for their environment and each other to ensure everyone gets the best opportunities for learning.

All our Year 1 classes are big and bright with plenty of work on show. Each class has access to its own outdoor area, the school wildlife garden and Science pod. This allows us to provide a wide range of learning opportunities for the children

Throughout the year we do lots of interesting topics such that cover the Year 1 curriculum. In Year One the morning focus is usually literacy followed by maths, whereas the afternoons usually focus on our topic and other curriculum areas. We provide lots of opportunities for cross-curricular learning to ensure children are engaged and excited by their learning.

See our curriculum page for more detail on the subjects taught this year.

There are Year 1 writing workshops for all parents to work alongside their children this year:

Please look out for details of workshops for the spring term.

Reading and sharing books at home

The children need to bring their book bags into school every day as this is where they keep their decodable reading books, share books, comment books and any homework or letters they have been given. Comment books are used to inform you about your child’s progress and parent feedback is always valued. In Year 1 we expect the children to be reading at home regularly – each evening if possible. In addition, the children will regularly receive some sight words (tricky words) to learn for spelling.

Parents are always welcome to help us on our school trips. Please discuss this with your class teacher. The Head Teacher holds a volunteer induction meeting at the beginning of the school year which volunteers must attend. All volunteers must have relevant checks to work in school, which we will help you with at the meeting. Please see the Volunteers in School page and look out for more information in our school newsletters.
